Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation and ulcers in the superficial lining of the large intestine, also called the colon.

And that includes the rectum.

It's estimated that about a million Americans are living with ulcerative colitis, making it the most common form of inflammatory bowel disease.

It can be painful and debilitating, occasionally leading to severe complications.
