With this year's Super Bowl fast approaching, we wondered how much do you know about this global sporting phenomenon.

It was June 1966 when two rival football leagues agreed to merge and form one National Football League.

The new league was divided into two conferences and a championship game between the two conference winners would decide the leagues overall champion.

So where did the Superbowl name come from?

In a word, college.

For years college football had used the word Bowl to describe its annual championship games, and of course a super league needs a Super Bowl.

Bernoulli didn't begin until 1970.

But on the 15th of January 1967 the Green Bay Packers and Mackenzie City Chiefs went head to head, what is now known as Super Bowl 1, the name was first used officially in 1974, Super Bowl for the new league's first championship game.

Fast forward a few decades and the Super Bowl is the third biggest annual sporting event on the planet.

Americans eat more food on Super Bowl game day than on any other day of the year except Thanksgiving.
