So I thought I would like to propose a very interesting topic.

Okay, 安澜的日语可能就到这里了, 对吧?

I can say a little bit more than that, but yeah ,I don't speak Japanese.

Yeah,but I mean if you have noticed like “コーヒー”（ko-hi-） for example, and“ホット”, Japanese words like Japanese language they have a lot of loan words, in Japanese they call it 外来语.

yeah.

Loan words in English.

Well, for example when I went to a cafe and I learned the phrase for takeaway, "テイクアウト" [teīkuauto]”

There is actually a Japanese original like Kanji word for it, but now they just say they do say"テイクアウト" a lot.  Now these are called loan words. Every language has its own loan words from other languages.

Oh yeah, I was amazed at how many English words are in Japanese, but the pronunciation is just so completely different.

I can tell you something very interesting, even the most basic words like colors, for example, like Japanese words for it. Let's give one example like blue, right? So Blue, there is a Japanese word 青い（aoi）. However, now a lot of people say ブルー"(burū)

ブルー"（burū）.

It's a shift from some of the Kanji to more English loan words.

Is it? Does it kind of actually change though? Because there are some languages that, for example the concept of blue is quite different between that language and English. For example, 青in Chinese can be blue and also can be green.

Yeah, but I think in Japanese it's just blue.

because there is another word for green in Japanese.

Oh okay.

But anyhow, another very interesting thing is you know that interestingly, although they have so many loan words from English, the word for English people, for England, English people, is not from English, like you know how they say English if you... they say"イギリス" [igirisu], which is Portuguese, which is from Inglaterra, from Portuguese language.

Oh yeah, that's because the Portuguese got to Japan before we did.

I see, but today we're obviously not talking about Japanese language. No, we're talking about the other way round. There are also many loan words that English has borrowed from Japanese.

That is right. So we're gonna be talking about some of these loan words. And to be honest, I always find rather difficult because in English when we talk about Japan, we use obviously the Japanese words, but sometimes when I'm talking with friends of mine, Chinese friends of mine, I have to try to translate ( into the Chinese ) into the Chinese pronunciation.

So for example, I was telling a friend of mine I went to Kyoto and he did not understand Kyoto even though he spoke English but he understand Jingdu京都.

Okay, so let's delve into it. I mean we talk about Chinese loan words into English. A lot of those were Cantonese. But they are... First of all, do you think that many English speakers realize that there are many Japanese loan words in modern day English.

I would say yes. Because most of these terms are specifically related to Japanese culture, entertainment, food, and also history. But there are one or two words that even though I was a bit surprised to know that they came from Japanese.

First and foremost, I know it's your nightmare, but it's one of the most popular forms of entertainment or you used to be for East Asians especially.

Yes.

...which is karaoke.

Yes Karaoke .

Karaoke, for those of you who don't really know the origin of this word. Kara- is like “empty” in Japanese, -oke is a Japanese version of the English word “orchestra”.

Okay. So literally empty orchestra.

Because you can hear the music, but you don't see the singers or the players.

Yeah, It's actually a very beautiful rendition of it.

Oh Exactly, I quite like that.

Karaoke.

So the thing is that for example, when we think about karaoke, we think about karaoke nights in a pub when (everyone can see you) everyone can see you, everyone gets on stage and they sing a song and people are either clapping or they're booing you.

That's an open mic night.

That's an open mic, and that is how we look at karaoke. So when I first came to China, I was really surprised when someone said about going for karaoke because that would be my idea of hell. But then we went to this place, and it was private room.

Where it's just a nightmare for your mates when you sing.

And the other very popular thing, which is I think it's one of Japan's strongest soft power, which is manga and anime.

Yes.

日本的动漫, manga is a Japanese word for 漫画, and anime. This one is interesting. So anime is a Japanese version of the English word animation.

Yes, but shortened to anime, but then English re-borrowed it into English to specifically refer to Japanese animation.

Yes. And manga and anime are actually becoming really popular in the UK. So I went to a bookshop last when I was in the UK and they actually had an anime or manga section.

Yes, I remember seeing them around as well, especially some of the top grossing ones like Demon Slayer, 鬼滅の刃就是鬼灭之刃, 在英语世界好像也蛮火的.

So this is what I've seen all of these merch周边也有, goods and merch relating to these,咒术回战什么都有, but actually I have to ask, is there any sort of like stigma attached to...like Otaku or you're like a geek?

I think before there was certainly that sort of stigma, now it's becoming a little bit more mainstream.

Mhm. The ACG , was it anime, comics, and games?

But it's not as developed as it is in east Asia.

But there are also some like comic con, like coser events.

Yeah, but cosplay itself is still, it is an alternative lifestyle.

安澜, next one I'm gonna ask you, if I say the quintessential Japanese attire, Japanese clothes, what would it be?

Probably. Kimono

Kimono就是和服, 它其实写出来是"着物"（きもの）, 就是穿着的那个 “着”.

So Kimono. Most when you...in English, when people say kimono, they don't just mean the one worn by women, right? It was like kimono robes for men.

Yeah, we would still say like “yukata”. But the first thing that comes to mind is probably a female kimono.

Yukataゆかた就是和服浴衣. It's basically a summer like a simpler version of kimono.

Well exactly. And we sometimes say a kimono bathrobe, for example, or kimono robe, basically, like a dressing gown that someone wears at home. But in a sort of Japanese style,

Yeah, kimono really isn't for everyone. No, it's like you need to be very flat chested, very thin, pull that off.

Another thing in terms of culture, very interestingly, because I sometimes teach poetry in the university. So one thing that you do teach as a form of poetry is Haiku. Have you ever heard of Haiku?

Yes, I have.

就叫俳句. Is that actually something people have heard of in English?

Yeah, we learn it at school.

You learn Japanese poetry in school?

No, we learn Haiku because you can easy use an English.

Haiku还有就是5-7-5 5个音节, 7个音节, 5个音节.

Yeah. So for example,

Well, Chat gpt is writing a haiku for you.

它是按照音节, 不是单词, 是音节, say that again,

Wait till I compose a haiku to say no? All right. I think they use haiku, now back to this, I think they use haiku to teach kids poetry is because it's a very simple sort of play on the sounds, on the syllables,

Oh exactly. It's not really a rhyme, it's just the syllables, it's a syllable count.
