I want to jump in because this passion problem is one that I think about a lot, especially for undergraduates. We seem to say to undergraduates, follow your passion as if we're saying something good to them.
I think all we're saying to them is, I think all they're thinking about when we say that is what's my passion tell me and I'll do it because I haven't figured it out. And what if I make a mistake and I picked the wrong thing?
So yes, it's really good to be passionate about things, but I personally don't like this thing of follow your passion because I find it sort of rare certainly. I didn't know what my passion was until it sort of appeared in front of me and the experiment worked.
