救命,他本可以直接戳瞎我的,却还认真演了一段!

本期新词

最近有关Tiktok的话题大家多少有些所耳闻吧?今天Buzzword要说的词就跟社交媒体超级相关.

在TikTok里面你也可以经常的看到这个词, 它已经成为网络梗 meme这样的一个存在.

Let's first of all, look at the definition.

Cringe now usually means when someone acts/ or is so embarrassing or awkward, it makes you feel extremely ashamed and/or embarrassed.

这个词的意思就是说, 当你看到别人做出那种很让人觉得尴尬或者别扭的举动的时候, 你自己都会觉得尬抽或者说尬到脚趾抠地抠出三室一厅这样的一种感觉.

因此 Cringe就真是完全对应了咱们中文网上说的 “尬到了”“尬抽了” 这个感觉.

This word Cringe came from Old English, the word Cringan originally meant to fall, to yield in battled, 本来还有 “投降”的意思.

Now Cringan then became Cringe sometime in the 16th century when it introduced the feelings of fear and embarrassment.

到了16世纪它就开始有了恐惧和尴尬的意思.

Finally, by the 19th century, the meaning had cemented itself; cringe meant to“recoil in embarrassment, shame, or fear.”

到了19世纪它就变成了 “尴尬”或者 “羞耻到扭曲”这样的一个感觉.

So Cringe is actually very descriptive. When you cringe, your body language shows you don't like what you see and hear.

You close your eyes and grimace. You may even jerk your body away from the offensive sight or sound.

Cringe真的就是你直接的有生理上的反应, 真的就是跟咱们中文里说的尬到脚趾抠地那种感觉, 尬到扭曲.

Initially the word was really only used to describe someone's reaction to something that's really awkward and embarrassing.

But now the word cringe is widely used to just define something that you dislike or do not understand.

Cringe这个词跟中文的 “尬” 一样, 也是在社交网络上广泛的被使用, 甚至有点滥用了.

Internet trolls would use this word as an insult towards people in fandoms with bad grammar or so on and so forth.

一些网络喷子, 甚至只要看到他们不喜欢的东西或者接受不了的东西, 就会说 “尬死我了”.

They basically use this as an attack or an insult. Now because it's so widely used, it developed into all forms of the word.

Originally the word Cringe is a verb. You actually cringe at something.

Originally the word Cringe is a verb. You actually cringe at something.

You can say, for example, I'm cringing at her song, 听了她的歌我简直尬死.

Or now it can be used as an adjective, such a cringe dress. 穿的什么裙子啊, 尬死了;

Or it can be a noun. Stop writing cringe. 你能不要再写那么尬的东西了吗?

Or even an interjection或者干脆就是一个感叹词.

When you see something that makes you cringe, just shout, cringe! 尬到我了.

Now this whole reaction might sound very superficial, but there's something deep behind it.

Evolutionary history shows cringe is burst by the fear of social rejection, a feeling similar in intensity to physical pain.

虽然看起来就是网络的一个梗, 但是你要深挖, 在cringe这种尬文化的背后, 其实藏着的是我们对于social rejection的一种恐惧, 也就是说我们每个人都害怕被社会给排除在外, 都希望能够融入社会, 能够被人所接受.

People literally cringe in embarrassment because the ability to feel vicarious embarrassment is influenced by our ability to emphasize with others.

我们之所以在看别人的行为的时候, 会觉得尬到我自己都要抽过去了, 主要是因为我们自己能有这样的共情能力;

所以能够感到这种secondhand shame and embarrassment, 所谓的二手尴尬.

So cringe at its heart is as much an instinct as it is a conditioned physical response to public shame.

所以当我们为别人的行为而尬抽过去的时候, 其实也是我们在长期的社会生活中逐渐被养成了一种对于public shame公众场合的耻感, 这样一种身体上的反应.

It is linked to a feeling of fear of rejecting social exclusion by rejecting anything the culture automatically deemed as bad.

This is a coping mechanism, maybe one to response to self-hatred, insecurity and memories of our own failure.

我们之所以会替别人觉得尬, 是因为看到别人的这种行为, 马上就会联想到社会不能接受这种行为;

再往深挖, 还可以挖到我们自己的不自信不安全感, 甚至是唤醒了我们对于自己过去的尴尬经历的一些记忆.

Now remember I said the cringe culture,  it pretty much became a culture or at least a subculture.

For example, in the 2000s, we saw the rise of cringe comedy shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm or the Office were both samples of this trend.

因为 “尬”形成了一个文化或者说是亚文化. 在21世纪初还专门催生了Cringe Comedy, 专门以Cringe为主打色调的喜剧.

比如说可能有人看过的the Office就是一个特别典型的Cringe Comedy.

It's all about socially awkward people how they embarrass themselves in social situations. And we feel that second hand embarrassment by watching them.

I cannot watch cringe comedy because I cringe too much. In terms of music, you also have Cringe Pop, which is a genre of pop music that is written intentionally to be cringeworthy or cringey.

说一个事情很尴尬, 如果用形容词也可以把它叫做cringey或者cringeworthy.

所以现在还有一种流行乐的一个流派, 就叫做cringe pop. 我觉得有点像现在有的那种洗脑的神曲或者那种尬舞类的东西.

被网友调侃为“歹徒舞”的傣族舞

It is a broad category that encompasses songs and music videos that are essentially awkward in nature.

最近的那个 “傣族舞”还 “歹徒图” is pretty much in that category.

Now let's move on to the sample sentence.
